Matt and Nicole Alexander, two experienced Ontario teachers, were terminated by the Renfrew County District School Board in October 2023. Their offence? Declining to actively “celebrate and affirm” LGBTQ issues in the classroom when those demands conflicted with their sincerely held Christian beliefs. After suspensions and investigations, the couple lost their livelihoods. Their own union, the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario, refused to properly defend them.
Now the Alexanders are seeking justice. The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms is representing them before the Ontario Labour Relations Board, arguing that the school board and union violated their Charter rights to freedom of religion and conscience. This case highlights a growing pattern: educators who hold traditional religious views are increasingly pushed out of the profession unless they publicly conform to ideological demands.
True North stands firmly against this kind of compelled speech and religious discrimination in public institutions. No Canadian should have to choose between their faith and their career, especially in a country that claims to value diversity and inclusion. When schools and unions punish dissent on matters of conscience, they don’t foster tolerance — they enforce conformity. This case deserves close attention as it tests whether Charter protections still mean anything for people of faith in Ontario’s education system.
